Based on the immensely popular webcomic Along with the Gods (2010-12) by Joo Ho-min, the first film centres on a deceased firefighter taken to the afterlife by three archangels where he faces seven trials over 49 days to win his rebirth. In this second instalment, which begins where The Two Worlds concludes, the three guardians are promised by the Yeomra (Lee Jung-jae), king of the afterlife, their own reincarnations if they succeed in their next case following 48 successful ones.
King Yeomra (Lee Jung-jae) , lord of the afterlife, is unsure whether Soo-hong, who wreaked havoc as a vengeful spirit in the last installment, deserves a fair trial. However, he agrees on one condition: Gang-lim can proceed with the case, but only if Hae Won-maek and Deok-choon go down to the present world to dispatch the troublesome housegod Sung-joo (Ma Dong-seok) and bring an overdue soul to the pearly gates.
Up in the afterlife, Gang-lim and Soo-hong don't exactly see eye to eye, and the only way for the former to get the latter to go along with his plan is if he tells him about his life on earth a thousand years ago. Hae Won-maek and Deok-choon engage in a similar deal with Sung-joo the house god, who is just trying to secure a stable future for the grandson of the soul they must collect. They will help him give the boy a fair chance at life if he tells them about their lives on earth (unlike Gang-lim, the pair have no memory of their former lives).
On the other hand, beyond the clunkiness of the new storylines, one of the most disappointing aspects of the new installment is that despite all its worlds and time periods, there's a distinct lack of women in the Along with the Gods multiverse. Trials only take place in four of the seven hells this time, conveniently skipping all three which were presided over by women judges. There is Deok-choon of course, but compared to the last film, not to mention the way she's represented in the original webcomic, actress Kim Hyang-gi is mostly called upon to play a damsel in distress.
Producer Won Dong-hyun of Realies Pictures (one of two companies behind the feature, along with director Kim's Dexter Studios) recently announced that plans were underway for a third and fourth installment, which would furthermore set the groundwork for future spinoffs and prequels. Given how much of a monster The Last 49 Days is poised to be at the box office, we may very well be bearing witness to Korea's first Marvel-style cinematic universe.
For their latest adventure, underworld guardians Gang-lim, Ji-hun Ju and Deok-choon have been tasked with defending Gim Su-hong from the trials of accusing hells. They only have 49 days to prove his innocence so he can be reincarnated. This is similar to the plot of the original movie, but they raise the stakes this time.
The film also broke the opening day record in South Korea by attracting 1,263,788 viewers on the first day of its release, which is more than twice the amount of Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (422,339 viewers). On the second day of its release, the film attracted more than 2 million viewers. On August 4, the film attracted 1,466,416 viewers, making the film set a record of the most viewers in a single day, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War that attracted 1,333,310 viewers in a single day before. On August 5, it was reported that Along with the Gods had attracted 5,409,817 viewers on its fifth day, making the film the fastest to reach such number, surpassing Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds which set the record in a week, and The Admiral: Roaring Currents, the first most viewed film in Korea, which set the record in a six days. Along with the Gods placed first in the weekly box office. The film accumulated $46.2 million from 6.2 million admissions. Along with the Gods holds the record for the fastest film to reach 7, 8, and 9 million views in South Korean box office history. It passed 10 million views on August 16, 2018. The film passed 12 million views as of August 30, 2018, becoming the 13th most-watched film of all time in South Korea.
